As I was going through a chemo treatment, I knew the different side effects were not far behind from invading my body once again. Some of the side effects were like clockwork while others were sneaky and mischievous. Nonetheless, I started to see the pattern and probability of certain side effects. The side effect that was most scary to me was the change in my vision. The effect of natural and artificial light on my eyes would cause some strange reaction that would start with seeing white covering my eyes from the ends of my eye inward. In order to prevent this from happening, I had to turn off all lights including the television to not be affected. Despite the black out curtains, some light would still gleam through the sides of the curtain into the room. During this time, I was not working and had a limited income from the short and then long-term disability checks I was receiving; therefore, I had to be frugal in order to be able to afford all the medications, travel and other necessities in fighting cancer. For this reason, my mom used her creativity to solve my problem without having to spend any money. She decided to cover the windows with the thick style aluminum foil. Success, no more light gleaming through the sides of the curtains. Actually, the room looked very dark like I was deep in a cave. It reminded me of the time that we visited the caverns attraction. As we walked further into the cavern, the tour guide turned off all the lights and told us to try to put our hands in front of our faces but it was pitch dark that we couldn’t see anything not even our own hands. My room had become a makeshift cavern which was amazing because it aided me tremendously in my extreme sensitivity to light side effect.
In life, we may not always have the resources to solve problems the easy way but there are always alternative solutions to any problem. Having to rely on ingenuity and creativity to solve some of the many problems along the way in my cancer journey made me stronger and more appreciative of my blessings. At first, I felt defeated by my limited resources and then came a voice of inspiration from my mom who said there has to be a way to fix this, let’s see what we have. Remember in life there is always a solution for everything as long as you never give up, never lose hope and always have faith in God.
