Darkness

The color changed from daylight to a darkening shade reflecting a night-time sky.  As I was driving, the beautiful scenic road transformed into a steep upward stretch full of obstacles.  Chaos and darkness filled the path in front of me. Fear slowly creeped into my very core and I was tempted to turn around.  As I looked into the rear-view mirror, I couldn’t see the road behind me anymore, terror now set in, had the road collapsed?  I did not know.  Looking forward, I now had to swerve around various obstacles that had now appeared on the road when suddenly, fire started falling from the sky.  This caused me to drive at higher speeds in a heighten state of shock and panic.  My mind went blank as I desperately tried to focus on the road ahead with only one goal in mind which was to get to safety.  Suddenly I realized something even more bizarre and terrifying was coming up ahead. Oh no! there appears to be NO more road in the horizon, I need to make a sharp right turn.  There, I could no longer drive either so I abruptly got out of my vehicle and ran in an effort to find a secure area.  As I ran, I saw the ground filling with fire which made me look to all sides searching for an escape path. I saw that in the direction where I had come from were some buildings and on the other side was a pitch-dark alley. I could either go back to where I was trying to escape from or take a chance into the dark abyss.  In my desperate moments of trouble, I quickly decided to head into the unknown darkness in hopes of finding safety and surviving this war-like zone that I appeared to be experiencing.  As I ran into this pitch-dark alley, I could not see anything, it was like I was deep in a cave where you cannot even see your hands in front of you.  As I continued cautiously walking in this darkness, I suddenly started to see a glimpse of light which I used as a guide.  As I kept walking the glimpse of light started getting bigger and bigger and all of a sudden, my next steps were inside of this building where I was pleasantly greeted by other people who had made the same decision as me and had found shelter and safety.  As I saw them, I felt a sigh of relief run through my entire body.  As, I was about to talk to them, I woke up. As I opened my eyes, the first thing I thought was this was a very strange dream or was it just a horrible nightmare?

After I was wide awake and had time to fully analyze what I had experienced while I slept, I came to the conclusion that this was a strange dream that summarized what I went through during my cancer battle. For me, this dream reflected part of my cancer battle, where I kept fighting to stay alive with each treatment session.  I could not go back; the only way was forward.  The road was bumpy and full of obstacles with twists and turns.  At times, when the treatment was no longer working, I felt like I was walking into a pitch-dark alley where all I had was faith in God and hope of a future.  I did see the light and found safety when I was given the news that I was in remission and cancer-free. I then awoke to my new life as a cancer survivor which was and still is the most precious gift of all and the best feeling in the world.
