Meaning of a Name

Life can be joyous, chaotic, sad, or marvelous and we do not know what tomorrow will bring into our lives.  If we stop to think about it, life is a journey in which we hold the key on how we will experience it.  For some of us, like myself who is a cancer survivor, we find ourselves at a crossroads where we are deeply reminded that life’s journey is a gift, not a given, and that we can never truly know when our journey will end.  In reality, all we can do is decide how our lives will unfold.

During one of my chemo rounds, I was chatting with some of the other cancer warriors who were undergoing treatment as well.  Our conversation consisted of trivial topics because we wanted to keep a light mood.  I do not recall why but we started talking about baby names and the meaning of each one.  My name Kelly came up and well a meaning for my name is female warrior.  The group said we figure you never thought you would be living up to your name and actually become a strong female warrior.  Later that day I reflected on their statements and realized I had endured a great deal of pain and experienced difficult times during this particular part of my life’ journey and had become a stronger person.  My parents had chosen my name, did they know I would grow up to be a strong female warrior.  Does our name even have a bearing on our life’s journey?  Did God have my parents give me this name to reflect my journey?  Unfortunately, I do not have an answer to these questions, but I do know that I became a warrior during my cancer battle and continue to be a warrior in life.   

What does your name mean?  Does your name’s meaning reflect how you have experienced life?  Are you letting the meaning of your name dictate your life’ journey?  Although, my name means female warrior and clearly my life’s journey has led me in a path where I have had a choice on whether or not to take on the role of a warrior.  Your life’s journey is your decision.  Of course, we can’t change events in our life like cancer but we can adjust ourselves to reach our desired destination.  Don’t expect others to understand your particular journey; especially, if they have never had to walk your path.  For me, I have learned that our life’s journey can change in the blink of an eye and that we do not know what tomorrow will bring; therefore, I have decided to connect with God through prayer for guidance.  To be honest, I am a strong woman so at times it is hard for me to be still and want to handle things on my own accord, but I am reminded that I need to trust in God with all my heart.  I know God has a marvelous plan for me. I need to be patient to wait on it and acknowledge it when it comes to me.  Choose how you will experience your life’s journey.  Remember, each day we are alive we have a choice, what’s yours?
