As I was starting my life as a young woman, my life took a turn in such an unexpected way that I could have never imagined what was about to happen to me. One minute I thought I had a cold and the next minute I was diagnosed with cancer. Up to this point in my life, all I knew about cancer is that it was usually a death sentence. Cancer was not something within my control. In the blink of an eye, I thought all my hopes, dreams, and future plans were about to end before they were even started. Thankfully even though I had to fight literally to the death, with God, my mom and my loved ones by my side I was victorious in the war against cancer. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and a few years later after receiving a clean bill of health, my life took another unexpected turn that I could have never imagined would happen to me. I was just beginning to enjoy my cancer free diagnosis. I had even started to have hopes, dreams and plans for the future, now that I had received a second chance when suddenly and unexpectedly my mom passes away. My mom was my rock throughout my life especially during my cancer journey. This too was devasting and beyond my control. Once again, I felt hopelessness and lost after losing my mom.
Of course, none of us have control over life-or-death situations. However,I have learned over time that how we respond to those situations matters. In reality, any decisions we make and how we react to each situation will impact each of our lives forever. For example, after the cancer battle, it took some time for my mind and body to get back into a “normal” routine and back into the work place, but I needed to take that time to be able to get back into my life. Also, after my mom passed, despite the sorrow that I felt, I knew that I needed to move forward in life because life does not stand still. Now that I reflect back on my life, I feel that my experiences although traumatic (cancer diagnosis, and death of a parent) have helped define me and my journey in life. I feel as if my life were a book then every day, I would be writing my story. At times, when I have been unhappy or felt that I was at a standstill, I know that I can change that in my life because I am the author of my journey. I would think on what the next chapter could be and I would see if revisions were needed to move in the right direction. Despite everything that I have gone through and revisions that I have made in my life, I know that nothing that has happened to me is a surprise to God. God will always be the love, strength, support and guiding light that will help get me to and stay on the right path meant for me.
If you are feeling lost or insecure that you are not on the path you want to be, don’t stress. I have found that talking to God through prayer has helped me find my way at my most difficult times. Also, evaluate your life and decide what steps are needed to get to where you want to go. Be the author of your own life story.

Thank you Kelly. “I am the one who holds the pen and my life is the page” . That is a good way to look at it.
