Sometimes, everyday challenges start to overwhelm us because we want to take control of everything. When this happens to me, I take a pause, smile, and think to myself “there I go again, wanting to be in control of everything.” Although I may have the illusion that I have control of everything, in reality most things in life are out of anyone’s control. Of course, there is some things that we can take control of, for example, our emotions, thoughts and how we handle certain situations, but we are not able to control what other people will do and what will be the consequences. While I am pondering all this, I am reminded about what another wise cancer warrior told me once. This happened when I was at a different out-of-town hospital that I went to because my treatment was no longer working therefore, I had to stay at a hotel close to the hospital. I think she saw how scared, anxious and overwhelmed I was with the whole situation she turned to me and asked “You relaxed on the hotel bus, even though you didn’t know the driver on your way to the treatment center?”puzzled I replied, “well, yes I did.” She then continued to say, “I bet you that you didn’t even think about it, you just gave up control to this bus driver?” I then thought to myself, was I supposed to think about it? huh? Then I replied,” No, I didn’t give it a single thought, I just got on the hotel bus, took a seat and went along for the ride to the hospital.” Then she responded, “You see, every day you give up control of your life to others and you don’t take a moment to think about it, you just do it automatically.” I then starred into her eyes and said “wow you have a solid point. She then asked me, “So why don’t you just relax about your current challenge in life, knowing that God is in control?” Tears ran down my face as I realized that I kept trying to take the driver’s seat and control my life when all I needed to do was to relax in the passenger seat because God is at the wheel of my life.
Now, I pose the same question to all of you, do you relax when on a plane, cruise ship, bus, uber/Lyft car or train, even though you don’t know the who is operating it (pilot, captain, driver)?

I learned years ago the phrase “Let Go, Let God”…it’s not always easy, but when things start to feel crazy start repeating the phrase while you control breathing in and out. As you’re breathing out, push the stress out with it. It does help! Sometimes we forget that God is in control and has a plan for whatever is happening.
