What is Love?

Due to ongoing changes with my cancer battle, I received treatments in different treatment centers in three different cities.  During one of my week-long chemo sessions, I arrived early in hopes to be processed before others so I would not have to stay that late.  Doing the process task sometimes felt like it was a dreadful but nonetheless necessary task for that day. One day, while I was waiting in the lobby, I noticed this sweet elderly couple walked into the lobby.  They both told me good morning, and asked me how are you?  I responded with I am doing well, thank you and how are you? I asked them We are doing great, they responded in unison.  I was amazed by their enthusiasm, especially because one of them was there for a chemo session.  I on the other hand, was not at all happy about having to do another round of chemo.   I actually felt like I was in battle mode or in a war zone and here I see these two joyous people.  This puzzled me with delight.  The couple took out some breakfast sandwiches from a bag and asked me if I wanted one.  I politely declined.  The man asked are you sure? this smell great, they are from this new bakery he continued.  We think that it is important to try different food from new restaurants.  The lady explained well we love food and being adventurous, but not everyone is the same dear.  I responded, oh I love trying new foods as well, it is just that with my chemo cocktail, does not agree with my stomach.  The lady said ask them to give you nausea medicine, it works.  I explained that unfortunately, not even the 24-hour nausea medicine made any difference for me.  She said, well that is just a shame, not being able to enjoy food.  I guess my chemo cocktail is light and yours is very strong.  As we had this conversation, I saw a gentleness and fond love towards each other, it was magical to see.  At this time, my mom walked into the lobby with my bag that I had forgotten.  They greeted my mom with the same joy as they had greeted me.  This couple’s joy and love beamed outwardly through their eyes, words and movement.  The joy that they portrayed was the love for each other, the love for food, but most importantly the love for life.

This couple reminded me to not only be in fight mode, but to remember to find joy in life no matter what the circumstance.  After seeing the couple at times when I was not overly sick with the effects of my treatment, I tried to find joy in everyday conversations, board games, a night cruise, special dinner, and time spent with loved ones.  Even today, at times, I get caught up in the whirlwind of everyday life and forget to embrace everyday moments.  I remind myself to take pause and appreciate life. God gave me this precious gift and I intend to love, enjoy, savor and cherish every single second of it while I am still alive.
